Sir,

I am grateful to the Editorial team of Indian Journal of Dental Research for publishing the article "Prevalence and determinants of early childhood caries among the children attending the anganwadis of Wardha district India" [1] under original research. Early childhood caries (ECC) is a multifactorial disease and has numerous biological, psychosocial and behavioral risk factors. [2],[3] Because ECC is a preventable condition, one could make the case that any incidence of ECC is a failure of the oral health system. In the present article, author has systematically considered the various factors related to ECC. Therefore, it is necessary to know the each aspect in relation to ECC, rather than considering each variable independently as in Chi-square test. [4] It will be more appropriate to do bivariate logistic regression to determine the predictors of ECC and to assess the importance of contributions of each variable. This will help to overcome one of the drawbacks as quoted in the article that interrelationship of various factors is not considered.

One more aspect I would like to mention here is, during examination for dental caries it is not recommended to use no. 23 explorer. It was suggested in World Health Organization Oral Health Assessment Form 1997 to use community periodontal index probe. [5]

I also suggest the reader to go through "Problems of correlations between explanatory variables in multiple regression analyses in the dental literature." [6] This article focused on problems encountered while undertaking the dental research and complexity involved with multiple regression tests.
